AI & Judicial Research

Artificial intelligence and Uganda's Judiciary.

Research focused on AI-assisted legal research, the doctrine of precedent, judicial discretion, transparency, independence, access to justice and responsible institutional governance.

AI-assisted legal research · Judicial decision-making · Access to justice

AI-assisted legal research and judicial decision-making.

My research looks beyond whether courts use AI. I examine how AI tools may influence the authorities presented to judges, the treatment of precedent, the exercise of judicial discretion, and the ability of lawyers and litigants to understand and challenge technology-assisted processes. I also consider the governance, transparency and human oversight required for responsible use in judicial institutions.

01

Precedent and Legal Authority

How AI systems retrieve, rank and summarise cases can affect which authorities are seen and how precedent is understood and developed.

02

Judicial Discretion

The research examines how AI-generated research or analysis may interact with judicial reasoning while keeping legal interpretation and final judgment with the judicial officer.

03

Transparency and Accountability

Where AI influences legal research or court processes, its role, outputs and limitations need to be capable of scrutiny, verification and accountability.

04

Judicial Independence

The research considers safeguards against technological, institutional or vendor influence that could interfere with independent adjudication.

05

Access to Justice and Digital Inclusion

AI may widen access to legal information, but connectivity, cost, digital skills and language can also determine who benefits and who is left behind.

06

Responsible Judicial Governance

The work considers governance questions around procurement, data protection, validation, auditability, human oversight and ethical use before AI tools become part of judicial systems.

Research Focus

Why the research matters.

The research examines how AI may change legal research and judicial work, and what safeguards are required so technology supports rather than displaces legal judgment.

Precedent

How AI retrieval, ranking and summarisation may affect the authorities judges and lawyers see and the way precedent is understood.

Judicial discretion

How AI-generated research or analysis may interact with judicial reasoning while final legal judgment remains human.

Transparency & accountability

How technology-assisted processes can remain explainable, reviewable and capable of legal scrutiny.

Independence & governance

Institutional safeguards concerning procurement, data, validation, auditability, human oversight and vendor influence.
