04 / AI Research

Artificial intelligence and Uganda's Judiciary.

This research examines what changes when AI becomes part of legal research and judicial work: which authorities are surfaced, how precedent is understood, how discretion is exercised, and what safeguards are needed for accountability, independence, fairness and access to justice.

AI-assisted legal research · Judicial decision-making · Access to justice

AI-assisted legal research and judicial decision-making.

The research looks beyond whether courts use AI. It examines how AI tools may influence the authorities presented to judges, the treatment of precedent, the exercise of judicial discretion, and the ability of lawyers and litigants to understand and challenge technology-assisted processes. It also considers the governance, transparency and human oversight required for responsible use in judicial institutions.

01

Precedent and Legal Authority

How AI systems retrieve, rank and summarise cases can affect which authorities are seen and how precedent is understood and developed.

02

Judicial Discretion

The research examines how AI-generated research or analysis may interact with judicial reasoning while keeping legal interpretation and final judgment with the judicial officer.

03

Responsible Judicial Governance

The work considers governance questions around procurement, data protection, validation, auditability, human oversight and ethical use before AI tools become part of judicial systems.

05 / Articles & Research Publications
